Synopsis

This is truly the next best thing to witnessing reggae avatar and hip-hop forefather Lee "Scratch" Perry rant live and direct to the bass-heavy rhythms of Neal "Mad Professor" Fraser's Robotiks band. "Hello San Francisco," Scratch announces in his gruff, phlegmy voice at the concert's start. "I was the first scientist / who burnt down his laboratory / the Black Arc studio / property of Lee Scratch Perry." Those few rhymes neatly encapsulate the incident that first set folk awondering if Perry was compos mentis. Later antics, like demands for champagne 'n' urine cocktails written into recording contracts and flashing MTV Europe's audience, continue to fuel this long debate. But who cares if Scratch is crazy or just playing? Those stream-of-consciousness tidbits studded with evocative Rasta terminology play neatly against the Robotiks' reggae vamps, and legions of roots reggae fans are drawn to the spectacle like filings to a magnet. --Elena Oumano

CD Reviews

If you enjoy perry's previous "mad" works, this is a must!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This album captures the second night of the two legendary sanfrancisco performances by "scratch". These were his first appearances in the US in 17 years and they did indeed move the city. He is backed by the powerfuly competent Robotiks Band with performance engineering by the infamous "mad professor" himself. His spirit came alive on this night treating the crowd to the classic "Roast Fish and Cornbread" as well as "Bucky Skank", Perry's personal take of "Papa Was a Rolling Stone". It grooves deep, HARD, and heavy!"

"I know this work is excellent. I disagree with the review stating this album as a failure. I say this music is number one and I see the future as being prime for PERRY"S new and best music work Ever. Love Heights."
