"Boris Godounov is one of the truly great operas of all time. It is a demanding role which only a few have ever been able to sing convincingly. Rossi-Lemeni was one of those few who performed it with distinction in the 1950's. Leopold Stokowski, one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, was a master of Russian music. Together, these two artists have brought us one of the truly definitive recordings of excerpts from this most significant work.
I had the pleasure to see and hear Rossi-Lemeni in a live performance of Boris with the San Francisco Opera in 1951. I shall always treasure that evening. Unfortunately the conductor on that occasion was not Stokowski. However, here we have an outstanding remembrance of a memorable happening."
