Synopsis

Amazon.com
Beginning "Blue Skies" with a lovely Flicka-like soprano, Anne Tofflemire delivers a winning collection of Irving Berlin standards. "He Ain't Got Rhythm" is snappily accompanied by bass and drums, and punctuated with quotes from other Berlin songs; "Moonshine Lullaby" is deliciously languorous; and "God Bless America" is nicely understated. If any further legitimacy is needed, Berlin veteran Michael Feinstein is on hand to share counterpoint on "Pack Up Your Sins and Go to the Devil." The only disappointment here is that the disc is only 41 minutes--it'd be great to hear Tofflemire covering "They Say It's Wonderful," "How Deep Is the Ocean," "What'll I Do"--but that's a good argument for volume 2. --David Horiuchi

She Stole my Heart

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Anne Tofflemire has an astonishing voice: it's absolutely beautiful and full of heart. There's something remarkable about someone who can make you hear every word of these classic American songs as if for the first time. In addition to a moving "God Bless America", and a great arrangement of the title song, the duet with Michael Feinstein is full of joy, and there are really rare and funny numbers like "He Ain't Got Rhythm" and "Manhattan Madness". The liner notes are great fun too! I've given copies to my friends who love Irving Berlin and they have been thrilled. You will really enjoy this CD!"

"This CD is excellent for easy listening and for singing along. The young lady has a beautiful voice and sings so effortlessly. Her diction is something sadly lacking in a lot of music today. She has chosen a variety of Irving Berlin's music which shows not only his versatility, but also hers. I would love to hear more of her work."
