Amazon.comIt's easy to assume that the best American musicians can only be found in the 10 or 20 U.S. orchestras with the biggest names and operating budgets. But that's just not always the case, particularly among wind players. Partly because of the high level of wind teaching at American conservatories and partly due to the ridiculous oversupply of talented musicians, we find excellent musicians all over the country. Those featured here, principals of the Wichita Symphony wind section, are outstanding. The Lieurance Woodwind Quintet, named after Kansas composer Thurlow Lieurance, is superb, the oboist especially so. This delightful disc of music by Elliott Carter, Irving Fine, Arthur Berger and others deserves a place right alongside the best-known recordings of the repertoire. --Gwendolyn Freed
