If you need something to pump you up for the upcoming second edition of Sarah McLachlan's all-female touring festival, Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music is the ticket. This two-disc compilation features 25 live ... more »cuts from the inaugural trip. On first spin, it's hard not to notice the range and sheer power of the vocals here. Many of the artists give performances that eclipse their studio work. The most obvious example of this is the opening "Mississippi," where Paula Cole unleashes a voice larger than life. Predictably present is McLachlan's "Building a Mystery," the definitive Lilith song, which began its assault on the air waves at the start of last year's tour and, well, kept building. The house that Sarah built is still growing strong. Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music is satisfying proof. --Carla DeSantis« less

Incredible

"for that version of eternal flame on disc one, and the incredible result of combining my 2 favorite artists (mclachlan and Jewel) along with the indigo girls to sing "water is wide," this CD is priceless. You want it, then see if you can pry it from my cold dead fingers or just buy it right now and save some time and energy."
Tasteful compilation of Amazing Female Artists

"Not only is Disc 1 terrific, but Disc 2 meets all expectations as well. Some personally rated highlights are Paula Coles-Mississippi, Abra Moore-Four Leaf Clover, September 67- Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, and Wild Strawberries-I Don't Want to Think About it. What blew me away was the first song on Disc 2 w/ the Indigo Girls, Jewel and Sarah McLachlan--all those beautiful voices sound amazing intertwined. Definitley a CD to buy."
ONE SONG makes this CD worth its weight in gold

"The combined talents of the Indigo Girls (Amy Ray and Emily Saliers), Jewel, and Sarah McLachlan are just too much for anyone else on this album to compete with. On "The Water Is Wide", a favorite cover for the Indigo Girls, they harmonize on choruses and take turns on verses, culminating in Sarah's beautiful high notes. Jewel sounds almost childish on this song, but still great. Four of the best, all on one song ... incredible."

Maybe I'm too much of a male Chauvinist, but I was never very interested in the various Lilith Fairs. However, for some reason I picked up this CD (at the library - OK I'm cheap) and gave it a listen. It's really quite good overall, albeit a bit uneven. I've listened to it for a while now and it wears quite well.
The Editorial Review above says "Many of the artists give performances that eclipse their studio work" and that's certainly true for Joan Osborne. Her "Ladder" is definitely one of the best live performances I've ever heard. She's a great singer and she had a helluva band backing her up that day. (BTW, one of the other great live songs is "Naked Eye" by Luscious Jackson on Lilith vol. 3.)
Other particularly good songs on this CD are: "Sur Tes Pas" - Autour De Lucie; "I Want" - Dayna Manning; "Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner" - September 67; "Cain" - Patty Griffin; "I Don't Want To Think About It" - Wild Strawberries. I hadn't heard anything by any of these artists before, so I consider this quite a find.
In sum, a nice double CD with a nice range of unique works. As of this writing, it's available as "new" for $3.34 + s/h! Definitely worth it.
