"This release from the UK-based label Sepia is a very important one. It profiles one of the most underrated Broadway stars of the 40s and 50s, the lovely Lisa Kirk.Lisa Kirk first came to public attention in the original Broadway cast of Rodgers and Hammerstein's ALLEGRO, where she sang the showstopping "The Gentleman is a Dope". While the show was a flop, Kirk got another taste of stardom a few years later, originating the role of Lois/Bianca in the original cast of Cole Porter's KISS ME KATE. Kirk later turned her attention to a career as a recording artist, and dubbed Rosalind Russell's singing for the 1962 film version of GYPSY. Later Jerry Herman brought Kirk back to Broadway for a role in MACK AND MABEL, his cult-flop masterpiece.This CD includes 25 sublime tracks of Lisa Kirk at the peak of her powers. Stand-out tracks include the enjoyable "I Feel a Song Comin' On", the delicious "Love is the Reason" (where the multi-tracked Kirk sings a three-part harmony with herself!) and the wistful "Life is So Peculiar".Kirk also sings two duets with Fran Warren ("Just a Girl That Men Forget" and "Dearie"), joins with Don Cornell for "Have You Ever Been Lonely", accompanies Eddie Cantor in "The Old Piano-Roll Blues" and sings opposite Bob Haymes in "Wait Till the Sun Shines Nellie Blues".On the whole, this CD is a worthy tribute to the divine talents of the great Lisa Kirk.
