Soft, Powerful

"When Kyle Field is good, he's one of the best singer-songwriters around. "Soft Pow'r" might be his best. This album keeps the playfulness and wordplay of his other, weirder work, but with a chill vibe that makes it really listenable. His best albums (Light Green Leaves, Magic Wand and Wonderue, in my opinion) fall on this same side of the "too weird" line. "Soft Pow'r" is a great comeback from the hugely disappointing Grow, which I found hard to stomach. This one feels more mature. This is relaxing, mellow, yet playful music. It's easy to hear his similarities with Devendra Banhart: Kyle's toured with him as a member of his backing band. One might be tempted to consider him a spin-off, but his sound is all his own."
