Best Performances at the Bavaria State Opera from 1997-2005
Smorgy | Southern California, USA | 04/11/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I confess that I bought the disc specifically to get the CD version of Kasarova's 'Amour, viens rendre' live performance in Gluck's Orphee et Eurydice. I have the DVD of the performance and have been wearing it out. The sound is better on this disc than on the DVD. Kasarova is Orphee with the can do attitude and already dreaming of the glorious happiness to come with his rescue of Eurydice. The two L'incoronazione di Poppea piece with David Daniels are enchanting. And Anne Murray is really stellar as Xerxes. A must have disc for opera lovers! And newcomers also, a really good survey of excellent virtuoso opera pieces.

This disc is jammed with jaw dropping performances at the Bayerische. It includes:

1. Wagner: Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg (overture) conducted by Zubin Mehta

2. Handel: Ariodante: 'Tu vivi' by Paul Nilon (Ivor Bolton)

3. Monteverdi: L'incoronazione di Poppea:'Idolo mio, Poppea' by David Daniels (I Bolton)

4. Monteverdi: L'incoronazione di Poppea:'Pur ti miro' by David Daniels and Anna Caterina Antonacci (I Bolton)

5. Handel: Xerxes: 'Crude furie' by Anne Murray (I Bolton)

6. Handel: Giulio Cesare in Egitto: 'Se pieta di me non senti' by Susan Gritton (I Bolton)

7. Gluck: Orphee et Eurydice: 'Amour, viens rendre' by Vesselina Kasarova (I Bolton)

8. Handel: Rodelinda: 'Spietati' by Dorothea Roschmann (I Bolton)

9. Verdi: Otello: 'Canzone del Salice' by Anja Harteros (Z Mehta)

10. Wagner: Tannhauser: 'Oh du mein holder Abendstern' by Martin Gantner (Z Mehta)

11. Wagner: Gotterdammerung: 'Trauermarsch' (Z Mehta)

12. Wagner: Die Walkure: 'Wehwalt heisst du furwahr?' by Waltraud Meier and Peter Seiffert (Z Mehta)

All are excellently sung and orchestrated. The audience is awesomely quiet (these are all live performances). The packet booklet gives good short synopsis on each of the pieces but doesn't include libretti."
