Synopsis

Album Description
Twenty-something Durrett, the niece of southern musical interpreter Vic Chesnutt, has lent her voice and musical talents to a number of her uncle's recordings over the last decade. This debut is a collection of songs she amassed over those early years. Recorded and performed with Chesnutt between 1996 and 1999, "Husk" is a ghostly album overflowing with swells of melodic murkiness. Durrett's meandering guitar waltzes past the dust-ball corners of Chesnutt's eerie production and vocal harmonies as the sounds of Wurlitzers, trombones, accordions, and broken down drums provide a darkened backdrop to the lighter, swirling vocal melodies of her soothing voice.

She did what she could, but not what it took...

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Liz recorded this in the mid-90's as a teenager and that sort of teen angst and unpolished talent from that era in her life certainly shines through on this evocative recording. This album precedes a more recent collection of songs for another album due out later this year. She certainly has a certain haunting and soulful presence to her voice and live she is quite amazing, spellbinding even. There are many moments in this album that are just truly gorgeous. It's a very unpolished sound though, and is sometimes overly simplistic and lacking in direction. Still yet there is a lot of beauty to glean here, expect great things out of her in the future."
