Synopsis

The Monkees' "Last Train to Clarksville," Seals and Crofts's "Diamond Girl," and Boz Scaggs's "Lowdown" represent just a fraction of the hits containing licks or solos by guitarist Louie Shelton. Shelton's L.A. session work ushered in a golden age of guitar on records when his torch was taken up by aces like Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, and Jay Graydon. For all that, Urban Culture doesn't have the impact of his best studio work, but it does accurately reflect his artistic range. Appreciation of Shelton's art comes from close listening to the niceties of his elegant touch. Occasionally, as on "Inner City Blues" and "Boogaloo (reminiscent of some of John Scofield's recent work), the energy level lifts off a bit, but more often the grooves, while refreshingly human, are more relaxing than exciting. Still, Shelton has the distinction of having helped invent "smooth" and in his hands, it is still a positive thing. --Michael Ross

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Louie Shelton has been gracing music lovers with great hooks since the 60's and his guitar playing on some of the greatest hits of all times. All serious guitar players and listeners know him as one of the masters of the perfect melodic guitar lines and chords at the right times. In Urban Culture he has written some wonderful tunes that feel like your there with him in the urban sitting of a jazz club. Not only has he shown his skill for the right melodic patterns but also beautiful chords and octaves. Any great student of guitar needs to listen to Louie Shelton. His skill is knowing not to over play but to leave the right space for the mood of the songs to breath. Urban Culture may seem laid back but when you listen close it has lots of energy that speaks of genius."
