"This is great music. Though a 2009 release, this could have been recorded anytime in the last 50 years. This has the feel of the old Sun Studios recordings and is filled with fine guitar, harp and lots of terrific, gritty, raw electric music. Red wrote all of the tunes on this one and incorporates some of his life experiences as he has in the past. I enjoyed every track on this CD.



Red has played with many of the greats over the years and those influences are present here as Muddy and Elmore James seem to be lurking in the background with a guiding spirit and I'm pretty sure Howlin Wolf would be smiling at this one, as well. If you like your blues downhome and rockin', try this one out and don't be surprised if you play it a few times in a row. Beautiful stuff and thanks to Ruf Records for putting this cracking good CD out."

Excellent Modern Blues Album With Oldschool Flair

"Red's nearly 80 years old and can still whoop some major tail! Back to the Black Bayou is Red re-recording some of his old tunes in slight variation to the originals. He's backed by a great band which includes producer Little Victor, giving the album a dual guitar sound. The album was recorded in Norway(!), but you'd never guess as it sounds like you're sitting in a smokey New Orleans nightclub. Great stuff, very rowdy and rockin' blues. Not a bad track in the bunch.

Along with BB King, Red is one of the few blues greats from back in the day that's still active, and age hasn't hindered him a bit, maybe even made him sound sharper. The proof's on this cd, which I'd highly recommend to anyone who digs the blues."
