The Weight of Reflection
Parrish A. Highley | Somewhere I've Never Travelled | 10/03/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"If Bob Dylan had personally influenced another singer/songwriter, Bloodline would quite probably be the result. It's not that it sounds like Bob Dylan (or really even tries to), but that the engineering and production don't become barriers that separate the audience from the artist. That natural sound sensibility is a pleasant departure from the homogeneous sampling that makes one song indistinguishable from another in too much of modern music. Far more often than not, songcraft and painful sincerity carry the day. And although Bloodline is made of eleven different songs, when taken in as a whole they behave more like parts of longer suite. I was particularly impressed with the piano, accordian, and guitar arrangements of So Perfectly. The title track Bloodline has an almost Irish/Celtic feel to its folk and culminates with an epilouge that was nothing short of deft. The bittersweet lyrics throughout songs like What You've Wasted and Runaway reminded me of the lost love from my own youth, a mirror incapable of reflection. While my tastes tend to run to the grand productions of Alan Parsons and Trevor Horn, Lowlight's Bloodline is beginning to reside in a very tender place in my heart."
