Lucinda Williams does anguish so well it?s easy to forget that Happy Woman Blues is not just the title of her 1980 album, but also the way she thinks of herself. That identity comes across full force in Little Honey, the follow-up to 2007?s heavily brooding West, where her melancholy voice seemed to creak with sadness. Here, a full-throated Williams revels in the rejuvenation of her engagement to her manager/co-producer Tom Overby, over whom she?s positively giddy on "Real Love." Her newfound bliss opens the floodgates to a musical revival, as well, since Little Honey, her ninth studio album, ranks as one of her most diverse, ranging from pounding rock ?n? roll (the raw sex of the title track) to the Hank Williams-ish country blues of "Well, Well, Well," to "Knowing"'s ?60s soul. But some of the finest writing appears on "Plan to Marry," as thoughtful a meditation on love as any time-honored sonnet. Just when Williams seems to have run the gamut, she pulls out a Stones-y (via Louisiana) cover of AC/DC?s "It?s a Long Way to the Top" as the punctuation mark. It all makes for a rollicking ride with one of roots-rock's most unpredictable and passionate artists. -? Alanna Nash

"Wow, can't believe the negative reviews this got. I'm a casual fan owing three of her albums, so I had nothing to loose when I heard this, and I loved it from the get go: stir up some: Hank, Earle, Mazzy Star and Dusty in a stew and add a touch of Casandra Wilson for Soul and you've got LW. Sure her voice sounds a bit calculatingly affected at times, but let me tell you she does heartache real good, as we've heard before, so now we get an eclectic mix of other songs that tap other possibilities. Love the raw feel; guitar work is tasty good reminding me of Neil Young with Crazy Horse at times. A bit of tasteful Mephis-style horn work here and there. Her duet with Elvis Costello is the best Honky-Tonk he's ever done (believe me I tried one of his "country" records). Her frankness may be an acquired taste. There's a shock and awe quality to some of the songs, and some are a bit repetitive (maybe on purpose) such as on "knowing," which has a zen-like word play going on, but overall this is an engaging work and I don't believe it's fair to hold it up to the sacred cows of the past"

"Lucinda Williams' CD "Little Honey" is so good, that I cannot think of the right words to say. I wish that I could. This CD has something for most adults who are looking for a variety of music (rock, country, blues, etc.) I've had this CD for more than a year, and I still play it on a regular basis. (note to Lucinda; MORE PLEASE!!)"
