CD ReviewsDark, brooding and beautiful twilightsrose | Victoria, British Columbia Canada | 01/30/2001 (5 out of 5 stars) "Full of echoes, deep dark droning tones, noise and sounds (some of which sound vaguely like, or are, classical instruments) which weave and spiral in and out of caverns and voids...This music breathes and broods... culminating in an organic tapestry of nature and electronic combined. This can be music to disappear into, and although some of it can be disturbing and dark (as in song 4 Black Star - it contains something which sounds vaguely human/monster-like...imagine the heartwrenching cries/groans/howls of a creature which has lost the one thing which meant everything to it), this music is beautiful. This CD is a collection of songs which were mostly on compilations. They date from 1995-1998:1. Strange Attractor 13:52 (released with Black Star as 12" record on Plug Research 1996)2. Deep Calls to Deep 15:37 (recorded in 1995 for Side Effects compilation DeepNet)3. Deep Calls to Dub 11:09 (remix of the above, on compilation Seedmouth on Cold Spring 1996)4. Black Star 14:59 (1996 12" record with Strange Attractor..see above)5. Permafrost 6:27 (reconstruction of version originally on Side Effects compilation Vhumetmas/Archtypi in 1995)6. Of Fire & of Ice 11:40 (recorded 1997 or one of series of Dry Lung Compilations which is yet unreleased)" A Lustmord compilation of rarities Steward Willons | Illinois | 04/04/2008 (4 out of 5 stars) "When attempting to review a Lustmord album, one runs into the inevitable difficulty of helping the prospective buyer differentiate one CD from the next. I have the same problem with Muslimgauze and Merzbow. It's not that they keep putting out the same CDs every year. Just that they have a very personal style, are very prolific, and a lot of the tracks are very similar. That said, I'll give it a try. Purifying Fire isn't actually new material, but a compilation of older work from a variety of sources. Track 1 and 4 originally appeared on the rare "Strange Attractor/Black Star" 12". Tracks 2, 3, 5, and 6 were released on ambient compilation CDs - DeepNet, Seedmouth, Vhutemas Archetypi, and Dry Lungs, respectively. However, as I understand it, the Dry Lungs compilation never got released. The music all bares Williams' sonic signature of darkness and mystery. Strange Attractor and Black Star are the highlights. Deep Calls to Deep and Deep Calls to Dub are a bit too similar for me to really prefer one over the other. They seem to be remixes of the same source material, but I could be wrong. Since this isn't a typical album, it doesn't have the uniformity of sound that you get on something like Heresy. But, that means there's a lot more variety than one usually expects. If you're a fan, pick this up. Those new to Lustmord might do better to try Heresy first. Overall, this is a solid 4.5 stars." L U S T M O R D does it again Anthony Dicapua | 11/09/2005 (5 out of 5 stars) "is this guy amazing or what, this is probably one of my favorite lustmord CD's, i am so glad he released these tracks, they are incredible. every song on here is awesome, it contians what i thinik may be my favorite lustmord track, BLACK STAR, this is like the offspring between the union of aldebaran of the hyades and heresy(VI), if you know lustmord releases you need to buy this now before once again another one of his cd's are out of print. i also highly recommend place where the black stars hang, if it takes you months to try and track down a copy do it, it is worth every penny and every hour you spend searching."
