Beautiful music, musicianship

"these weiss recordings by lutz kirchhof (and the parallel series recorded by robert barto) provide a beautiful and unexpectedly poignant taste of the late baroque. the lutes in both series have a splendid tone, resonant and bright, and the recordings are close (20 bit technology is used) without being too detailed. the pieces are played with nary a buzz or flubbed note and with stunning rhythmic momentum and verve. (kirchhof once or twice pops a string in his enthusiasm.) the various suites by weiss are not strongly contrasted musically -- all are built around similar harmonic progressions and motifs, developed as arpeggiated chords and free scales -- and all the discs in the barto and kirchhof series are delightful: the music is gently propulsive, endlessly evolving, wistful, joyful, reflective and dancing by turns. the whole series is highly recommended."

"Very interesting album this is. For those who love Weiss, in the versions of Robert Barto or Konrad Junghänel: buy Lutz Kirchhof's Weiss-albums. This double-CD is not 100% well recorded: the sound is not as good, but the playing is good, and the music is even better. If you love Weiss, you should add this one to your collection, and also vol.3, which is really brilliant. Lutz Kirchhof is the most energetic Weiss-player around. He should record the whole Weiss-oeuvre."
