Eluding tidy categorization, Seattle's Midday Veil draw from an ever-deepening well of influences including krautrock, psych, folk, new age, metal, and a broad range of non-Western and traditional music. Midday Veil began in 2008 as a collaboration between Emily Pothast, a visual artist who turned to music during an intense period of spiritual crisis sparked by the death of her parents in a 2005 car crash, and David Golightly, a programmer and analog synth enthusiast who studied composition and electronic music in Germany (including courses led by Karlheinz Stockhausen at Kurten in 2000). Early intimations of the band's distinctive sound arose from the interaction between Emily's earthy, haunted vocals and David's subtle, expansive synth work, however the broad palette of the band's current incarnation owes much of it's shapeshifting audacity to the addition in early 2009 of Timm Mason - a sound artist who releases solo material as Mood Organ - on lead baritone guitar and Chris Pollina, a drummer whose experience ranges from hardcore to funk. The resulting combination has elicited comparisons across the psychedelic spectrum, from Portishead and Broadcast to Joseph Byrd's United States of America and American Metaphysical Circus. In addition to their music, Midday Veil have gained notoriety for their striking visual aesthetic, manifested in immersive multimedia performances (including two appearances at the Portable Shrines Escalator Fest, which David and Emily co-organize), per formative installations at visual art venues, and stunning music videos.
