CD ReviewsMythos - self-titled (Spalax) Mike Reed | USA | 10/06/2004 (5 out of 5 stars) "I realize that timing WAS on my side the evening that I was lucky enough to locate a copy of this hard-to-find digipack import. To avoid confusion, this is the band from Berlin,Germany. This was the band's first album out of four they put out in the '70's as this was originally released in 1971.I heard around that time period the Mythos had toured with Humble Pie.What an experience that must've been. The Mythos debut here would be best classified as 'elaborate krautrock'.Though never breaking out of the 'cult band circuit',The Mythos seemingly put their all into the making of their four lp's.Sort of sounds(to me anyway)like Amon Duul II cross-breeding with Agitation Free.I thought "Oriental Journey" was pretty mind-lifting as I was also impressed with the science fiction-like spoken word and the top notch flute work on "Encyclopedia Terra,Part One" and "Encyclopedia Terra,Part Two".Mythos main stay is flute player/vocalist Stephan Kaske and I believe he may be the only player that appears on all four lp's.Should appeal to fans of Nektar,Eloy,Grobschnitt and Focus.Recommended IF you dig krautrock." Some very unique and dark sounds pressed into the progressiv Abe | Columbus, Ohio | 03/29/2008 (4 out of 5 stars) "After listening to enough of these types of 70's progressive rock albums, you start to put together who sounds like who and so on. Mythos, while still fitting into the general style, doesn't remind me of any single band. It starts out with a sweet flute jam, reminiscent of instrumental Jethro Tull with darker undertones. The second track is a hazy, droning song with indian instruments and some spacey electronics. The third track brings back the intensity with an almost heavy-metal sounding war-is-hell-themed song (like them or not) that reminds one of Necronomicon. The last two songs break off into the "long crazy freak-out" category with hypnotic rhythms and melodic passages. At the end of the album they pretty much tell you to kill yourself, though, which can be kind of a downer. At least that's what I got out of it. I highly recommend deciding for yourself! What kept this from getting 5 stars was that I found some of the lyrics to be kind of pretentious, but there aren't many to worry about. Overall I had a great time digesting all the sounds that Mythos had to offer, and what a cool cover!" Beautiful recording Joseph L. Kolb | harris, mn USA | 12/05/2008 (5 out of 5 stars) "the newly remastered captain trip release is absolutely flawless! (well, okay, the vocal tracks are a little in the background.) this 1971 release has been reissued several times, the last being on italian spalax, i believe. this is one of my top ten favorite cds. mythos is a german space rock band that adds some eastern influence to their long songs. it is short, under 40 minutes. the artwork is the exact replica of the lp ohr release. i highly recommend getting this new remastered version. it's like hearing it for the first time all over again!"
