Passion meets purity

"Caveat: this CD contains spoken poetry as well as music. Usually this is a defect. I don't deduct for it here because a) it's a CD, so you can skip tracks b) the spoken performance is absolutely stellar, and the selections are perfect. That said, this CD could be one of my favorite Machaut recordings. Musicianship here is top-drawer and the clarity of the recording makes it possible to hear all the lines (not always the case with other polyphony CDs). What stands out here is the penetrating emotion this group communicates. Listen to the three hocket notes in the triplum of the first line of the Kyrie -- it's no longer a musical convention but a breath-catch ending in a sigh of surrender. The Ensemble hew to the highest musical standard and never overstep the bounds of taste. But they bring more passion to Machaut than I have heard elsewhere. A revelation."
