CD Reviews

It's aout time!

"It's about time for more than one reason, It's about time that the Neurot label signed someone who doesn't sound like they are playing Melvins B-sides thru a Moog while underwater, AND it's also about time that someone stepped up and made an album that Touch & Go should have released! Here's your estrogen charged Jesus Lizard, here's your fuzzier Uzeda. Here is the best new album I've heard this year. I was lucky enough to see these folks from NY play in Tucson, AZ about a week ago - it was a small show in a small club; I think my friend and I were about the only folks there who weren't with the bands - it was AWESOME to sit in on what I like to think of as a private showing of this group - but it was also sort of disappointing to see such talent draw such a small crowd. Let me tell that a small crowd and a small stage didn't detract from their performance at all. It was LOUD, and the small area to prowl around in suited the sometimes creepy feeling of Julie's singing. If you get the chance to see these guys, do yourself the favor. Stand out tracks on the album include both "Ire Fire" and "Swarm", which can be heard both on the Neurot site as well as the band's site. Apart from these I have played Sugar about 112 times so far because it highlights her voice and vocal style so well, and Herculoid about 137 times just because the music is so compelling. The comparisons here could be endless, think of any other gal-fronted group and go from there, but no such comparison is deserved, Julie has carved her own niche and cemented herself into it with the hard work of the musicians who back her. It's a shame that the best bass line on the whole album is only 45 seconds long on the last track "Out..." I'd have liked to hear more of that...It's an edgy album, a late-night coffee buzz watching horror movies in the dark kind of album, it's a rock-and-roll album that shows roots in old punk rock, it's an album to buy immediately and play every day until they release another. Bunny said something to me after the show about a possible new album sooner than we might expect and I can only hope so."
Very good

"Made Out of Babies is a female fronted rock/metal group from Brooklyn who might draw comparisons to the Melvins, Helmet, Unsane and the Jesus Lizard. They have a very early 90's vibe going for them that works really well. Julie, their frontwoman, in addition to being very sexy and attractive, is a powerhouse vocalist with a literally INSANE vocal style. She can scream, she can sing and she does just about everything in between. On Swarm she squeals like the actress who played the Wicked Witch in the Wizard of Oz before launching into an impressive roar followed by some wailing stoner rock vocals. The guitar riffing is impressive too. I highly recommend this band."
Just a little note

"I think you should definetly get this album. The metal and hard rock music they play is LOUD, even if your sound is turned to one. You can hear Julie's voice EXPLODING around the studio. I know Julie, and so I got their album free. I said one day, "eh, might as well pop this in" and I was completely blown away. I feel lucky to know her as a person and not as a star (I knew her before MoOB came along) BUY THIS NOW!"
