CD Reviews

P is for Power, P is for Pop

"It's amazing how good friends can ruin your life, isn't it? So we got those four kids from Athens/Atlanta , and as you might know, there's really nothing to do in Atlanta at night... So, those guys meet in a bur, but this bur is really cool, so they play allot of Husker Du and Bob mould there. So the childrens say : 'we can do that', but we need someone to help us, because we're just kids... so to make a long story short, these two girls and two boys go to their friend, a guy from the neighborhood: Michael Stipe and ask him to produce their first album... So why is it so bad? Because Magnapop 1st album is a masterpiece of power pop, post American punk and good songs. AcDc and the Ramones proved that you can write two chords and a riff song and make it important rock n' roll, Magnapop did the same thing with pop. But from all that beautiful thing remained only the producer, Mr. Stipe, a few reviews in the Rolling Stone and NME and allot of great, catchy songs that nobody knows or play. Same thing happened with their 2nd album, produced by Bob Mould himself. So many great rhymes in the album (for only 7 tracks), but all I needed was their cover for a Big Star song from the seventies '13', which is all you can expect from a song these days. Magnapop are long gone by now, but you can still make it up for them for buying R.E.M's Green instead of some talented kids from Atlanta's debut album."
Post-Punk thrashy fun

"I wasted a lot of time late at night in bars checkin these cats out. I miss 'em, but at least I still have the CD to bang my head to. It's loud, fun and pretty simple stuff."
Great first album

""On the way, past the truckstop that's behind my evil haven ..." First line on the first track, & you know you're in good hands. It's amazing how, when you think that basic rock & roll is played out, somebody creates a fresh rockin' sound like they invented the stuff. "Magnapop" is that kind of album. I didn't care for "Hot Boxing" at all---didn't have the crazy spark of this album, with songs like "Favorite Writer" that I would just play over & over again ..."
