Synopsis

Amazon.com essential recording
Mahalia Jackson spent almost half a century singing gospel songs and spirituals, her unmistakable timbre and phrasing influenced by blues greats Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith. Jackson was gospel's first crossover superstar, and though she's been dead since 1972, her rich, smoky contralto has not been surpassed. Since her passing, Jackson's recordings have been reissued and/or compiled into collections many times over. In My Home Over There includes alternate versions of songs (e.g., "His Eye Is on the Sparrow," "In the Upper Room") reissued elsewhere, yet here they sound more full vocally and instrumentally. "In the Upper Room," for example, employs not only piano but organ and backing choir as well, made all the more resonant by the crackle of old vinyl and tape hiss. The title track is worth the entire disc, so great is the depth it conveys. --Paige La Grone

Still Going Strong

"Mahalia Jackson may be dead but her soothing vocals are not. This album is smooth and 100% Mahalia. If you lay back and close your eyes, you can almost see the Heaven that's she's singing about. A must have for the true Gospel lover."

Great Music; Questionable "Remastering"

"Let me begin by singing the praises of the late, great Mahalia Jackson: she was, and still is conciderd by many serious music scholars, to be the Queen of Gospel. Her range in tonality and style is engratiating to the ear. This cd showcases some relatively early recordings of Jackson, and apparantly was taken straight from a record player. Now, I happen to like the antique sound of extra phonograph noise... in moderation. Unfortunately, this cd cuts it pretty close, in my estimation. This, I can easily forgive; however, I find the chopping off of half of the first song, "In the Upper Room" a most aggregious and un-called for offense. What's more, the volume of the cd is overly conservative. I don't mean to complain and nit-pick, folks, but Mahalia always sang with PASSION! One can FEAL her words-- especialy if one shares her strong faith in Christ. No matter what the background of the listener, though, the listener can hear the struggle and yearning and determination in the soul of this master of gospel song. For me, this particular cd-- with a great song list-- does not capture the tangible effects of this great artist's music. I HIGHLY recomend the album, The Best of Mahalia Jackson. It's sound is clear; it has a good variety of styles, and it's powerful."
