"If you are looking for a well rounded recording of Mahler's Wunderhorn, look no further. This set features Janet Baker who is the perfect match for this cycle. Also, Mr. G Evans is a great contribution to this set as well. The sound may be a little bit stuffy, but it isn't that bad. Be forwarned that this set does not contain Urlicht or the one from the last movement of the 4th symphony. Otherwise, this set is very rewarding. Wyn Morris' conducting is fabulous, bringing out the charm in each piece. This disc also contains "songs from a wayfarer" which is not quite up to Dieskau/kubelik's standard, but at such a cheap price on IMP classics this one is a stealer."

"I adored this Wunderhorn cycle when it first came out in the mid-Sixties and thought it would remain my favorite forever. It hasn't, in part because the orchestra is pretty scrappy, in larger part because there is a LOT of microphone distortion whenever Baker or Geraint Evans hit high notes or sing at loud volume. Wyn Morris conducts well if not spectacularly. I hold on to this CD primarily for Baker's exquisite, intelligent singing--she never recorded these songs again that I know of. When the time came for EMI to record them, her home label chose Schwarzkopf over Baker, a mistake I regret to this day."
