Synopsis
Amazon.comGilbert Kaplan is a man with a mania and the means to indulge it. A wealthy publisher, he became obsessed with Gustav Mahler's Second Symphony, learned to conduct it, hired an orchestra and choruses, and did a quite respectable job with it, here memorialized along with the Adagietto from the Symphony No. 5. As vanity projects go, this one is several cuts above the rest. The package includes a lot of unusual goodies, including a recording of Mahler's own piano rolls, Mahler Remembered, recorded interviews with instrumentalists who worked with the composer, and, best of all, The Mahler Album. A CD-ROM digest version of Kaplan's coffee table book by the same name; The Mahler Album contains all the pictures of Mahler, his family, and popular caricatures that most people will ever want. There's even a pocket-sized reproduction of the first edition score. Kaplan may not go down in history as one of the great Mahler conductors, but this is a nifty little set and deserving of a place on the shelf. --Sarah Bryan Miller

CD Reviews
Unsurpassed! 07/11/1999 (5 out of 5 stars) "When I bought this recording, I initially took comfort in the fact that it was the London Symphony performing. However, Gilbert Kaplan has done a superb job of molding this mammoth work into a glorious performance. Everything about the 2nd Symphony has been balanced to perfection. Nowhere does an instrument stick out of the overall color and mood created. I found that the best time to listen to this, if you get a chance, is with the lights out and with a good view of a distance lighting storm. All I can say is Mesmerizing." Five stars? Hell, I give it SIX STARS! 06/02/1999 (5 out of 5 stars) "This music isn't just about Mahler - it's about the true meaning of 'amateur' (a word that derives its origin from what? - the Latin? - TO LOVE). Kaplan has realized the greatest Mahler fan fantasy imaginable - he has risen to the conductor's podium to reproduce for our delectation that delicious amalgam of emotion that is Mahler's Second Symphony. (Music that puts its arms around you - to paraphrase Mr. Kaplan.) There's much more, too, of course. The poignant CD-ROM is a real gem, but it is the music that ultimately delivers. An extraordinary value, particularly for hardcore Mahler freaks who will definitely appreciate the unique and precious efforts of Mr. Kaplan - amateur conductor, yes, but more importantly a kindred spirit. BUY IT!"
