The problem with this recording really lies with the orchestra. Antoni Wit is a very fine conductor--one of the stars of the Naxos catalog. But this orchestra is not virtuosic enough to meet this huge symphony's almost impossible demands, and the recorded sound fails flatter them to any degree. If you want an inexpensive version of the Third, then the Zubin Mehta/Los Angeles Philharmonic recording on London will serve you much better. --David Hurwitz

A Welcome Central European View of Mahler

"Despite the caveats of the Amazon editorial view, this is an excellent Mahler 3rd Symphony. Wit, like Vaclav Neumann before him, sees Mahler less as the progenitor of the Viennese modernism of Schoenberg & Webern but rather as the Czech that he was and even the descendant of Schubert through Mahler's teacher, Anton Bruckner. Wit's performance is to my ears near ideal, musical rather than existential, introspective rather than heaven storming. His performance is cohesive, beautifully proportioned and ultimately as satisfying as any Mahler 3rd on CD."
