Synopsis
Album Description Certainly one of the more bizarre major label releases of 1984, Malcolm McLaren's FANS has proven to be remarkably influential in ways that possibly not even its creator could have expected. On FANS, McLaren--who plays no instruments and sings even less than he did on his groundbreaking debut DUCK ROCK--combines opera, soul, and hip-hop in an entirely new (at the time) blend. Storylines and arias from CARMEN, TURANDOT, and MADAME BUTTERFLY are melded to slinky electronics. Oddly enough, the combination works. The singers, some of whom are operatic, and some of whom sound more like divas ofthe Whitney Houston variety, put over the material completely straight. There's not a trace of camp here, and the music, with its slow beats, woozy string samples and oddball accents, prefigures the rise of trip-hop by close to a decade. Put FANS beside a Moby album and you might have trouble telling them apart. Similar CDs

CD ReviewsThis is how I got past the classics as a child Jennifer House | Toledo OH | 04/07/2007 (5 out of 5 stars) "This album(and i mean vinyl...when I bought it in 1984 )was a COMPLETE breakthrough as far as the operettas and arias put in front of me .....this album tells the story of each and evey aria .....as an earley teen...this body of work enabled me as an adult to be able to attend and understand AND have a better overall appreciation of Puccini's work....he is my fave....still love them all...I completly recommend this C.D. ....pass it on to anybody who thinks that they don't like the opera!!!" RIP Malcom McLaren wb | Jockey Hollow/NJ | 04/09/2010 (5 out of 5 stars) "I first heard Malcolm McLaren back in the mid 1970's while in high school, his influence extends to the present day. Later in my misspent youth I came across Malcolm at the club called Danceteria in NYC. More than engaging in real life-McLaren was quite the bon vivant. Although now departed the Sex Pistols and Malcolm McLaren's influence will live on forever. Thank you Malcolm for giving me much to think about on this day." RIP Malcolm McLaren--Influential Album M. M. Davis | Lathrup Village, MI USA | 04/09/2010 (5 out of 5 stars) "When I originally brought this album on cassette in 1985 it influences my musical taste forever. Original, entertaining, solid production and well ahead of smash ups or other blendings of musical genres you hear today 25 years later. His influence is a blueprint on most pop/punk/rb today."
