Synopsis
Amazon.comWhat's up with those Brits and their love of American soul? Not that everybody doesn't love Al Green, but there's something unique about the British way of grafting American R&B onto their pop music. Following in this tradition is Mansun, who is combining blue-eyed soul vocals with post-shoe-gazer, meat-grinder guitars. It's as if Kenny Loggins was leading an army of effects-pedals-crazed guitarists in front of a wall of Marshall stacks. But that's just the starting point for this oddly complex disc. Each listen will reveal more careful textures, peculiar details, and quirky sonic hallucinations. In "Legacy," a whirlwind of altered guitars threatens to swallow Paul Draper's gorgeous falsetto. But it's in "Fall Out" when the disc takes off for uncharted regions. Copping Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" and overlaying it with a funk groove, the song then goes into what seems like a hundred tempo and texture changes in only 3 minutes and 47 seconds--all before tumbling and tripping into the next track. And that sets the tone for the rest of the album. It barely sits still for a minute, from the rubbery guitars of "Anti-Everything" to the munchkin vocals at the end of "Serotonin." 6 takes the Abbey Road to hell. --Nick Barry

Sabrinia P. (DreamADreamWithU) from LINDEN, VA Reviewed on 2/16/2007... This album really shows what Mansun could do musically and lyrically. Six is the "dark" Mansun we love and will touch you in a way no other Mansun Album will. I highly recommend to anyone who likes Mansun or Britrock, you won't be disappointed. Some songs may take a couple listens to grow on you but most will click right away!

Causes migraines Ian Murdock | NJ | 02/10/2004 (5 out of 5 stars) "What could you say about an album that interrupts your daily routine and sleep paterns? This sounds like a group of musicians who just found a bunch of different sounds to throw into an album and are uncertain about what it is trying to say. There is no effort to hide any seams, as the songs will change without any transition. Just a pause... maybe a whistle (like in the schizophrenic closer, "Being a Girl"). It't ideas and artists like this that make the most interesting albums. It is the perfect blend of experiment and melody. It's the same thing that makes Sonic Youth hard to listen to combined with what makes so many bands from the 80's a guilty pleasure (a meaningless word to me, really). Then we have Paul Draper's completely unique voice. Like an amateur opera singer from hell. And since it's less than $4 used right now, I suggest you buy it." A must buy angelo ribeiro | Porto, Portugal | 12/16/2003 (4 out of 5 stars) "sorry for them couse their're over but still one of my favourite bands. six it's a album that probably you won't like it at first time you hear it but with time you'll be on with it. great songs with complexe guitar sounds ... a must hear. be well"
