This was the debut recital of the highly successful Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. If you can't stand the idea of hearing four guitars playing Falla or Copland, you might be as surprised as I was by how well they work in practice. The reasons are imaginative transcribing work and the heads-up, exciting playing of the ensemble. All of the original works for guitar quartet are worthwhile. Sciammarella's and Brouwer's are both downright pretty, while Krouse makes an intriguing blend of Renaissance and contemporary styles. There should have been more music on this disc, but what's here is highly enjoyable. --Leslie Gerber

CD Reviews

A great introduction to the LAGQ

(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet began in 1980 as a student quartet at the University of Southern California. Still going strong today, it's the world's best known and most successful guitar ensemble. This 1987 recording showcases the quartet's rhythmically taut and vivid style."
