CD Reviews

One Man Sambatown!

"Marcos Suzano is an extraordinary percussionist who specializes in the Brazilian tambourine, the Pandeiro. He actually revolutionized the way this drum is played, creating new techniques and liberating it from it's traditional role. He has given the pandeiro a solo voice and can reproduce the sound of entire drum set on a tambourine! Pick up any great Brazilian album and you're likely to find him on it, from Marisa Monte to Gilberto Gil to his long time collaborator Lenine. Their duo album, Olho De Peixe, is also a fantastic album. Everytime I hear Marcos play, I'm astounded!"
Ele se considera um musico ecletico............

"...e realmente Marcos eh! Since I recently reviewed the cd "Flash" from o Marcos, I felt responsible to mention THIS cd also. The musics contained on Sambatown cd are reflecting the traditional pandeiro ritmos and "pagode groove" from this wonderful percussionist. "Flash" cd was a more "acid jazz" electronic affair, so these 2 cds are paradoxically quite "different", yet they retain a very similar flavor. Personally, I wouldnt own one without the other! The organic and the electronic elements of both cds are a wonderful 'marriage". The "hidden" treat however is the STRONG presence of the virtuoso saxes/flautim from Carlos Malta ( A mainstay of Hermeto Pascoal's longest tenured " O Grupo")along with the equally stellar Eduardo Neves. Legend of brasilian Choro/Jazz Paulo Moura performs 2 tracks , a fantastic combination of a veterano musician mixing perfectly with the "modern" sounds.... Lenine makes a nice guest appearance also- I think he is the "cream" of the younger generation of musicos of Brasil. He makes as much "music" with the Portugues language as he does with the musics themselves . Bravissimo Lenine! O Marcos developes more complex polyritmos from the tiny pandeiro than many TRAP drummers , this cannot be denied once your ears hear the performance! Ha cheiro de mundanca no ar! Not to be missed, a galaxy of stars for both Sambatown & Flash--brigadao Marcos."
An extremely exciting look at what Pandeiro playing can be

"If you thought that Brazilian percussion playing was just Samba,Pagode and Chorihno think again and listen to Pandeiro playing way in the future but really happening today. I recall listening to Jaco Pastorius one day and knowing that Electric Bass Playing would never be the same and the same happened when I first listened to Eddie Van Halen, I knew that Electric Guitar palying was moving in to the stratosphere well...Marcos Suzano has done it for the Pandeiro!Sambatown is a mixture of the undeniably effervescent sounds of Brazil with the potent and extremely explosive sounds of the "Headhunters", really the only way I can describe it.Check out Marcos Suzano whenever you can. This is musical history in the making."
