CD Reviews

The sweetest sounds of Margaret Whiting
Matthew G. Sherwin | last seen screaming at Amazon customer service | 02/20/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Margaret Whiting ranks as one of my favorite singers of all time. Her voice on this CD is rich, warm and vibrant. Margaret sang with great sensitivity and passion; and this CD proves it.

The CD starts off with the song that has a distinctly Irish feel to it entitled 'The Shawl Of Galway Grey." The haunting melody is also infectiously catchy; Margaret sings this number to perfection. The musical arrangement by the great Frank DeVol includes bells when Margaret refers to the church wedding wanted so badly by the young lady who wears her shawl to keep herself warm. "Lonesome Gal," also arranged by Frank DeVol, offers Margaret the chance to inject a sense of painful longing for her one true love. The female backup vocals are excellent as well.

Margaret enjoyed recording show tunes; and this CD contains three classic ballads from The King And I arranged by Lou Busch who was Margaret's husband at the time of these recordings. You get beautiful renditions of "We Kiss In A Shadow;" "Hello Young Lovers" and "Something Wonderful." In addition, Margaret sings "My Own True Love" to the theme of Gone With The Wind. Margaret delivers these showstoppers passionately and her renditions of these songs will remain in your memory for some while to come.

"Everlasting" features flawless backup vocals to enhance Margaret's performance--as if she needed it! Margaret's voice on this track shines brightly. "Where Did He Go" is another strong track on this CD, too. "Where Did He Go" sports a fast beat and this song has a shining musical arrangement by Nelson Riddle.

One number on this CD deserves special mention. "Joey" boasts a sweet melody that stirs your emotions. Margaret mentions how other men tried to woo her; but Joey impressed her by simply being himself without aggressively attempting to impress her as other men did.

"How Long Has It Been" haunts you with its gorgeous melody that makes such good use of the piano and the strings section. Margaret sings "How Long Has It Been" with passion; you truly believe she sings to her man in real life to express her feelings as she reunites with her lover. "The Second Time Around" features a playful quality to it with its wonderful arrangements; Margaret performs this flawlessly.

The CD ends with the sprightly "Who Can? You Can!" The upbeat melody and Margaret's excellent performance on this last track leave you wanting more. Terrific!

The liner notes offer an informative essay about Margaret Whiting and her music written by Robert Nickora; and the photos of Margaret are wonderful. In addition, Margaret herself contributes an essay about her career in which she reminisces about working in the music industry with such greats as Frank DeVol and Nelson Riddle.

I recommend this for Margaret Whiting fans; people who enjoy classic pop vocals will also love this CD. If you like this CD by Margaret Whiting I also recommend Margaret's two-fer CD entitled Love Songs by Margaret Whiting/Margaret Whiting Sings for the Starry-Eyed.

Enjoy!
