Recorded in 1973 and 1975 at the height of her Midnight fame, these San Francisco concerts from the Boarding House and the Great American Music Hall feature David Nichtern, John Girton and Amos Garrett (guitars), Ellen Kearney (guitar/ vocals), Michael Finnegan (keyboards/vocals), Michael Moore (bass) and New Orleans' legendary Earl Palmer on drums. Muldaur singlehandedly predetermined the genre that is now called Americana, as she sang lowdown blues, pure bluegrass country, ballads and New Orleans honky-tonk. A new classic. Now with seemingly every top forty dreck about gangstas, thugonamics, ghetto chickc, playas and who's to recap a time when an artiste like Maldur actually had a top forty pop hit-Midnight at the Oasis. Thirty years later she remains deliciously beautifully brunette and singing with the unique vocal stylings that only are reminiscient of Mildred Bailey [ the first great jazz and big band singer]. She gets better and better but back to this classic live recording! As always Maria brings along the finest musicians and here you hear the particularly fine trio of John Girton, Amos Garrett and David Nichtern. The wide range of American songs skips about as Muldaur introduces you to Billie Holiday, Rose Maddox and Memphis Minnie. That means visits to the 30s-40's of Memphis, Appalachia, and Harlem.
