Maria Muldaur: A Great Jazz Singer!
Dennis Lee Cleven | Madison, WI | 05/14/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I am amazed in my rediscovery of Maria Muldaur how she has explored so many different genres of music. She cannot be pegged as an artist who defies categorization. On "Jazzabelle" she is a jazz singer and she excels in this music. I don't have her first album "Transblucency" which has not yet been put on CD, but "Jazzabelle" is her second jazz album. She transforms two Bessie Smith songs from blues to jazz and they work perfectly. Muldaur's voice is suited to the various styles of music she has chosen to sing. She deserves more credit for her her many years of recording. Whether it is popular, folk, country, blues or jazz--Maria has done it and she has done a great job in her endeavours. She is a fine artist who has never put out an album that has been less than superb. "Jazzabelle" is a real find for anyone wanting to hear a woman singing jazz as it should be done. "Do Your Duty" and "Weeping Willow Blues" are two of the many songs that really stand out for me. I have no hesitancy in recommending this fine jazz album. Maria Muldaur is a great artist and this album is evidence of her wide range of musical diversity."
Muldaur Never Disappoints

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Maria Muldaur has emerged as one of the top blues singers and there are a number of wonderful albums that she has out that explore different styles. Jazzabelle is more of a jazz album and I didn't enjoy it as much as her albums that are more oriented toward the blues. I am not a big fan of jazz anyway. In spite of that, I still have to give this a solid 5 stars. Whether you call it blues or jazz or a combination, Muldaur has the perfect voice and perfect delivery for either Jazz or Blues. She also seems to always have a good backup band, which always helps. If you like more of a jazz sound than a blues sound, I think you'll really like this album."
