CD Reviews

Shostakovich recommended her
G. Bell | San Francisco | 05/26/2010
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I've been intrigued by Maria Yudina for a while. Shostakovich mentions her playing, says she could be great or willful, and tells a story of giving all her money to the church's poor box, finding her at her apartment with no heat in the Russian winter. And then there was this "the charismatic baglady of Russian pianism, unkempt, eccentric, deeply religious, utterly fearless (she once told Stalin she would pray for his salvation) and, invariably, interpretively provocative. There is no such thing a boring Yudina recording..." This is a person I would have loved to meet. How in the world did she live when Stalin killed so many for so much less? Must have been her musicianship.

I haven't heard all the disks but what I have heard I like. Sound quality is not the greatest, so be warned. Soviet mics and equipment. But tolerable. Five stars for better sound."
