CD Reviews

A disappointing matchup
Matthew Spady | 10/25/2000
(1 out of 5 stars)

"Although Marilyn Horne is one of my favorite sopranos, and I eagerly awaited the release of this album, I was less than inspired by end results. I don't know, but it sounds like the choir and Marilyn Horne were not even in the same city when they each recorded their parts. The phrases don't end together. There is no feeling of cohesiveness. The arrangements are mediocre."
A beautiful Christmas concert
Matthew Spady | New York, NY | 11/27/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Marilyn Horne's beautiful, lush voice and her direct vocal delivery are just right for this excellent Christmas recording. Most of the songs in this concert are familiar carols or secular Christmas songs, but the arrangements are anything but routine. The variety of selections, and judicious alternation of soloist, orchestra, and chorus, keep the concert interesting. Whether Horne is singing full voice in the glorious Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, a cappella in Lo, How A Rose, or in descant to the Christmas medley, she is, as always, direct and honest in her interpretations. Both The Bethlehem Babe, a relatively unknown hymn-like carol and the usually omitted verse preceding White Christmas are interesting bonuses. Although the Mormon Tabernacle Choir does not mirror Ms. Horne's superb diction, they do supply a warm accompaniment to her lovely voice. Dr. Jerold D. Ottley keeps the music flowing whether the tempo is sprightly, majestic, or slow. This is a lovely musical addition to every Christmas season."
