Synopsis

On this her best album, and only the seventh in 22 years, Marilyn Scott combines the high-tech production standards applied to her last two Warner Brothers records with a move back toward the classic 1970s jazz-soul sound that permeated her first four releases. The Perri sisters, once known simply as Perri, sound like the Emotions, a group of sisters from the '70s, on "Give In," and the exquisite Frank McComb, a Donny Hathaway clone, duets with Scott on a creative reworking of the standard "You Don't Know What Love Is." Instrumentally, there are great Brazilian grooves, and the Yellowjackets, who were recording with Scott even before their first record 20 years ago, add to the jazz fusion feel, as do George Duke and Ross and Joe Vannelli. Vocally, her words deal with romance, self-improvement, and social consciousness, and for her fourth straight album, there is a new Brenda Russell composition. The background harmony styles really stand out, because they vary so widely on each track. Scott is overdubbed several times to great effect on the opening track, the highly stylistic "Loving You," a tune on which Renato Neto does a great George Duke-like synthesizer solo. --Mark Ruffin

CD Reviews

Smooth Jazz at it's best

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I love Marilyn's previous work, but "Walking With Strangers" is an absolutely intoxicating release. I have waited a few years for this Cd, and it was definitely worth it. Marilyn's smooth and soulful voice is just an intro to the excellent music material. My favorites are: Loving You, All Of The Above and Walking With Stangers. The entire disc is great mood music. A couple of glasses of wine and Marilyn Scott, what pleasure!"

"Walking With Strangers is a magnificent CD. Her voice is silky smooth and very powerful. The songs are probably among the best she's ever recorded. Anyone who like's female singers should love this CD. very powerful music and a special hidden song that has nothing but meaning in these very stressful days. Everyone should own this record."

"This is a great mix of pop, jazz and R&B. Not just a fluff cd, Marilyn voice and lyrics are serious about that thing we call love. My personal favorite song is "All Of The Above", a virtual A to Z of love and romance. The music and production is top notch, featuring many great players. If you like Enya, Diana Krall, or even Streisand in her romantic mood, you WILL LOVE THIS RECORD!"
