Who knew that the Duke's melodies could sound so good on harmonica? And that's only the wind-up on an album that includes far more hits than misses; from the low-tempo almost-ballad "Let It Happen" to the out-front rhythmic drive of "I'm Hooked," this is high-energy west coast blues all the way, with a bit of rock and jazz (on "Now or Never" in particular) thrown into the mix. The true standout here, though, is "West Coast Flood," which proves why Hummel is considered one of the best harp players in the business. CD ReviewsSome of the best blues I've heard 07/17/1999 (5 out of 5 stars) "I am a blues harp player that has played in blues festivals and am pretty good. so when I hear the artistry of mark hummel, I can tell you if it is good stuff or not and this is some of the best harmonica music being made in the world and one of its better recordings. Mark plays three position switching between them frequently and definitely showing why he is one of the best position players. He has got killer tone and his chromatic harmonica, in his almost entirely in octaves style, establishes him up there with contemporaries paul delay and william clarke. All three of these guys have taken blues chromatic up hill of where George smith left. When Mark unexpectedly walked over to me during one of his gigs, in the middle of a song, handed me the harp and mike and told me to play, that was one of the highlights of my blues career. At this stage of the game I wouldn't be suprised if there are more white guys playing the Blues than there are black guys. As a result, you have to be pretty damned good to stand out among the crowd.Mark Hummel does exactly that with this latest CD. Playing out of California since the 1970's, Hummel shows that he has learned his chops from listening to the masters and isn't scared to surround himself with musicians of a high enough caliber that makes him sound even better. There is a hard edge to the songs on this album that harken back to the Southside Blues clubs that I love visit from time to time. Hummel's harmonica playing is reminiscent of Junior Wells on a good night.If you're a fan of Chicago-styled amplified Blues harmonica, I definitely recommend that you give this CD a listen."
