Plain as Day is a surprisingly diverse collection of songs, suitable to a quartet whose musical tastes span the whole of modern music without losing their knack for rock and roll. Punctuated by instrumental interludes, the album doesn?t so much jump genres as stroll from traditional blues-based rock half way into country, only to find them in one of the most profound and interesting psychedelic jam tunes in a decade. The lyrics range from the witty to the downright thoughtful without turning into country triteness or power ballads, and the words and music are so intertwined that it takes a while for the full richness to hit you. They even manage to include an anthem to the ladies they?ve loved and lost along the way that doesn?t come off sounding hokey. With surprisingly witty lyrics, and a consistent sense of enjoying themselves, Plain as Day is one of the most honest and upfront representations of a band that I?ve heard in years.
