A High Point in a Career of Great Work
Mr. Brown | Earth | 06/02/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"As a longtime fan of Hunters & Collectors and subsequent solo work of former front man Mark Seymour I would have told you that I needed another acoustic set like a I needed a hole in the head. How many versions of "Throw Your Arms Around Me" does one person need? In this case, it turns out I needed at least one more.

Top to bottom this record really shines. Rather than being sanitized by the studio atmosphere Seymour's vocals are lively and passionate. The Hunna's popular material (Throw Your Arms..., The Slab, Holy Grail) are all different enough to satisfy the more frugal fan who may have several live, studio and acoutic versions already. The newer or less frequently tapped tracks (Good Old Boys Stuff, Radio Death Song, the overlooked gem You Stole My Thunder) are so good that they measure up to the power and familiarity of the standard "greatest hits."

The thrust of the Liberation Blue Acoustic Series is to celebrate some of Australia's greatest music. In the case of Daytime & the Dark they really nailed the dismount. For the sake of history the record provides a nice snapshot of both H&C's music and of Seymour's abilities. To a more passive fan of acoustic pop or folk music it will not only provide an enjoyable listen but will tickle your fancy for more.

Every now and then you listen to a new record and you just know it's among those small few you will never tire of and always want at your fingertips. As a Hunters & Collectors / Mark Seymour fan who is obsessive about my music collection I am pleasantly startled to find that this album has had that effect.

If you dig this record check out Seymour's first record, "Last Ditch Cabaret" and some of the Hunters & Collectors stuff that is out there. I'd give high marks to "What's a Few Men?" (also packaged, with some changes, as the equally outstanding "Fate" in the USA), "Juggernaut" and the double-live (half pubs, half clubs) "Living in Large Rooms and Lounges.""
