Synopsis

How did a woman from the Czech Republic who now lives in New York decide to devote her life to Latin American and Caribbean music? Partly via same type of passion-from-afar that leads to admirable-but-by-rote Japanese Salsa ensembles and Northern European Country-and-Western bands. But this artist is far above such oddities. Aside from possessing a beautifully burnished, husky alto, what raises Topferova beyond novelty status is heart, originality and authenticity, each of which she possesses to a startling degree. Having achieved an idiomatic command of the Spanish language, she studied Cuban, Venezuelan and Colombian traditional styles until she was able to compose believable yet profoundly personal new material. Topferova's songs, accompanied by cuatro (a chordophone 4-stringed guitar,) Colombian harp, accordion, piano, French horn, violin and assorted percussion, use folklore as essence and springboard, but her coolly cerebral, cabaret-flavored, exuberantly jazzy persona is all her own. She is a true original. --Christina Roden

CD Reviews

Lovely Anomaly
Travis Dubya McGee Bickle | Texas Quail Hunting Camp | 12/22/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Ms. Topferova has made one of the most gorgeous Latin pop discs of the year...she's masterly in many modes: son, tango, samba, you name it, her smoky, sexy tones create a seductive, romantic and pensive mood...There's just one very strange anomaly about her though: she's Eastern European...But who cares? When you make music this striking nobody's checking your passport...highly recommended for Latin music buffs."
Beautiful and Romantic!! Another great CD by Marta!!

"Finally we can here the great Edmar Casteneda play his nylon string harp with the beautiful arrangements by Marta. Very soothing, brought chills to my spine when I listened with my eyes closed!! Romantic, World (europe and latin influenced), and Classically inspired, this cd is perfect for listening on that weekend getaway with a loved one. I help program concerts and saw several in the last year, including legends from James Moody- Jane Monheit. Out of all those shows, Marta's and Joao Bosco, (who only appeared in Cleveland, New York and Boston, from Brasil) were my favorites.

What a pleasure...

"I heard a snippet of Marta's music being reviewed on public radio and was captivated. I love Latin American music and Marta sings beautifully and her compositions and arrangements are mesmerizing. The harpist, Edmar Castenada, floored me as well. He plays the Columbian harp and it is like nothing I've ever heard. After hearing the review I discovered that they were performing locally so I purchased tickets and was treated to one of the best concerts I've ever been to. I purchased this CD and continue to be enthralled. New listeners, a great treat awaits you!"
