An underappreciated talent

"Immediately after purchasing tickets to see Marti and husband Don Dixon perform at the Ram's Head Tavern in Annapolis, I went on-line to buy this CD, knowing that she'd probably be playing songs from it at the concert. I was right - the first number she performed was "I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass" - an old Nick Lowe tune and my favorite on the disc. Marti and Don also performed "It's Not What I Want," and "Life's a Game." In their very entertaining commentary, Don mentioned that the song "Life's a Game" had been featured recently on "Melrose Place." This was a surprise to the mostly middle-aged audience, who were not big MP fans ... My second favorite song on the CD is Aimee Mann's "Put Me On Top," and in third place if Difford and Tilbrook's (of Squeeze fame) "Black Coffee in Bed." Overall, I really like the CD. A number of tunes are Dixon/Jones compositions. I like "Used Guitars" better, but this is still a great effort. At the concert, we were able to purchase a newly-released CD of an old album of Marti's "Unsophisticated Time." It's wonderful ()"

I liked her better with long hair

"Marti's voice and the choice of music she cares to sing will never be formulaic as a 'Dixie Chick'. But her music and voice will always be special. She conveys a passion without being syrupy. Besides, positive originality in any form (particularly music), is so rare. Marti deserves to be heard on the PBS program, Sessions At West 54th to show a wide audience her talents. Marti is as close to country as I can get. (Is she country?). I bought many of Marti's album on the premise that they would be as great as an early release of hers on A&M Records "Match Game". "Match Game" drew me in and has hence made me yen for a return to the soul, the balladry, the passion of this earlier time. This may be an obscure review of a good album but I guess I could sum it up with this: I want another FANTASTIC release from Ms. Marti Jones."
