Synopsis

Amazon.com
Spanning three decades, this single disc resum( of the great British guitarist captures many high points: "Little Cottage," "Banks of the Nile" (recorded memorably by Sandy Denny), and "Lord Randal" illustrate well why Carthy has so affected British folk rockers like Richard Thompson and Martin Simpson (note the at once modern and traditional feel of "Palaces of Gold") and also songwriters like Paul Simon and Bob Dylan. An essential instrumentalist and convincing vocalist, Carthy's popularity has never matched his influence; this collection is a fine starting point, and should whet your desire for Carthy's many individual albums. --Roy Francis Kasten

CD Reviews

All killer, no filler...

(5 out of 5 stars)

"An absolutely superb single-disc summary of one of England's finest hyper-traditionalist folkies. This disc doesn't include stuff from his early years with Dave Swarbrick back in the 1960s, but what is on here is all first-rate. The only sour note is the first track -- a poorly arranged version of Leon Rosselson's "Palaces of Gold", with a cheesy (and highly uncharacteristic) synthesizer. Otherwise, this is the bomb -- packed with one great song after another. If you haven't heard Martin Carthy before, but are curious, this is the best record to start with."
