"Martinu's "Epic of Gilgamesh" deserves to be much better known (as does Martinu's music in general). It is a powerful, vivid, dramatic work. Martinu's distinct harmonic style can be heard throughout.
This peformance is outstanding. All involved play and sing magnificently. I haven't heard the Marco Polo/Naxos disc, but it seems to have garnered favorable reviews. I can, however, unreservedly recommend this Supraphon release. Sound quality is very good and, as mentioned, performances are wonderful. If you don't know the work (as I didn't) then by all means buy the cheaper Naxos disc to get to know it. If you fork out the extra dollars for this one, you won't be disappointed. However you acquire it, Martinu's choral masterpiece belongs beside the finest 20th century choral/orchestral music: Bartok's "Cantata Profana", Janacek's "Glagolitic Mass", Prokofiev's "Alexander Nevsky", Stravinsky's "Symphony of Psalms" and others.
Again, just buy it!!"
