Here is another collection of classy but rarely heard songs from the (mainly) 1930s, played by some of the finest mainstream swing musicians performing today. The CD contains a couple of different recording units anchored by Marty Grosz (g/vcls), with Randy Reinhart and Jon-Erik Kellso trading cornet/trumpet honors, and Scott Robinson and Dan Block doing the same on reeds. Highlights include Block's beautiful low-register clarinet intro on MY PRAYER, Robinson's ebullient bass sax solo on CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS, and Reinhart's swinging muted trumpet work, as well as Block's alto, on WHOA BABE, the best track on the CD. The musicianship by all is extremely high, and excellent playing can redeem what otherwise would be corny tunes (SOMEONE'S ROCKING MY DREAMBOAT, for example). Reinhart doubles on trombone and takes wonderful trombone solos on WE'LL MEET AGAIN and I'M GETTING SENTIMENTAL OVER YOU. Robinson's multi-reed playing is amazing as usual - he'll switch often between instruments in the same song; his soprano sax solo on I COVER THE WATERFRONT is especially fine. This is a very handsome, lyrical, and swinging CD, and should give fans of this type of music hours of enjoyment."
