"Columbia Records are greedy cash cows. There, I said it. For years, they have shamelessly milked their artists by releasing unnecessary compilations every few years. Just look at Bob Dylan and Michael Jackson if you need proof. And, surprisingly, they are doing the same for Marvin Gaye as well.



'Songbook' is no different then any of the rest. You get songs from 'Midnight Love,' 'Dream of a Lifetime' and 'Romantically Yours.' Problem is, you see, YOU HAVE ALL OF THIS STUFF ALREADY. 'Songbook' is an awful compilation. Sloppily compiled, and if you want proof that Columbia Records has milked Marvin Gaye's legacy and music, look no further.



I don't recommend this album to anyone. Shame on Columbia for releasing compilation after compilation each year of Marvin's containing material that we already have. If you *really* need a Marvin Gaye Columbia years compilation, go seek out 'Playlist: The Very Best of Marvin Gaye.' While that disc is also incredibly flawed, it at least has some hard to find tracks and a few songs that weren't available on CD prior to it's release. Go for that one instead. Or, go buy the three Columbia albums (one studio album, two rarities compilations). I strongly recommend buying the three albums.
