""True Lovers of Adventure" is a truly great album by an incredible artist who should, by all rights, be a major star. Her voice is both velvet-smooth (as exemplified in the songs "Lost Art" and "One Thousand Promises Later") and rocking ("End of the Road")- she can coo like Debbie Harry and belt like Linda Ronstadt. Her songwriting skills are peerless- the heartbreaking "Why Don't You Leave Him" is an unbelievably moving and vivid portait of what keeps one woman in an abusive relationship. Her ability to write an instantly classic pop song is evidenced in "Lick the Sunshine"- my vote for summer song of '99, a sweet-as ice-cream gem. The production by Eric "Roscoe" Ambel is flawless- lush, cool, and gorgeous- the musicians sound like a band of rock and roll angels supporting Mary Lee's beautiful voice and songs. For a taste of heaven, get this record-your spirit will soar."

"From Whitefish, Montana, Mary Lee Kortes is a powerful vocalist and excellent songwriter. Amy Grant recorded Mary Lee's song "Everywhere I Go," which helped launch the Corvette. This 1999 CD joins 700 Miles in my collection. Her songs are strong as on the gentle lament "Lost Art" that is a worn-out love, "And we can't trade it, can't sell it at the fair, can't find a better frame for this old artifact." "One Thousand Promises Later" has a languid melody as Mary Lee ruminates about lost love, "Everybody says that time will heal the wounded, but time will tell & when the day's concluded, I'll build a better wishing well." "Need for Religion" opens with a driving rhythm section while "End of the Road" has chiming guitars from the Roger McGuinn/Tom Petty School of Music. Of my two favorite tracks, "Why Don't You Leave Him?" has a burning vocal of a battered woman, "Why don't you leave him? He said he'd kill me, and I believe him." While the subject is sensitive, the burning passion of the track makes it a standout. "One More Sun" is also a gem with catchy hooks, stinging guitar and bouncy percussion, "We become each other once again, hear the promise hand to heart, any day now forever starts." "True Lovers of Adventure" is a great CD, worthy of discovery nearly a decade after its release. Enjoy!"
