"Religous music is a style any jazz person can return to. Jazz has its roots in gospal, and everyone from Ray Charles to Archie Shepp had beginings and revisted the genre often, like a musical gas station.
Yet no artist approches this baliwick the same. Mary Lou William's take is outstanding. The music is soaked absoultely in the blues, but with its chiors and sterling playing, has the depth and sophistication of the highest music.
This album is highly advanced and highly listenable. It is rare that you will find music instinctive to like, but you will on Mary Lou's mass."
