CD Reviews

An underappreciated treat for the senses
Leo J. Wolansky | 09/06/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"After the incomparable "Werther" and the sublimely lyrical "Thais", "Therese" may be the best opera of that genius of melody, Jules Massenet. (Obviously, many people would place "Manon" right after "Werther"). Although the first measures of the orchestral opening number are not impressive, Massenet soon introduces mournfully beautiful melodies and sets the tone for another gorgeous opera.

Although the story of the French Revolution may not be the most appealing setting and the manner in which the heroine resolves her conflict seems quite unrealistic (without giving-away the ending), the beautiful music washes over our consciousness and makes us forgive all. The orchestral passages are inspired, full of the evocative melancholy that is so characteristic of Massenet. The orchestra rises to the occasion under the direction of Gerd Albrecht. Agnes Baltsa (mezzo) is superb in the title role, both in her sensitive interpretations and the pure sensuous power of her voice. The recording is "a must", even if you only listen to her scenes, e.g. "Oui, Je T'Aime" and "Jour De Juin, Jour D'Ete". I like Francisco Araiza (tenor), who plays Therese's lover Armand, although I could understand that some might not care for the unique character of his vocal production, finding it "an acquired taste" (listen to the samples to decide, if you like). George Fortune (bass) who plays Therese's husband Andre, despite a rich vocal quality, is in my opinion the "weakest link", often being close to under-pitch and having a voice placement that is too far back for French. He almost costs the recording the five star rating.

The sound quality is excellent. A French-English libretto is provided.

In conclusion, if you consider "Werther" one of the finest operas in existence and are looking for more of the same, you'll find "Therese" to be a wonderful experience."
EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE

"A SURPRISING PERFORMANCE BY THREE ARTISTS I DO NOT KNOW VERY WELL: AGNES BALTSA, WHO SHINES IN THE TITLE ROLE, FRANCISCO ARAIZA, WHO UNFORTUNATELY HAS NOT RECORDED MUCH, AND GEORGE FORTUNE. GERD ALBRECHT CONDUCTS. A MUST FOR ANY MASSENET LOVER."
