There can surely be no more enjoyable, more comprehensive way to pay tribute to the virtues of the oboe and at the same time follow the progress of the instrument from Romantic to modern times than the collection of twentieth-century masterpieces presented on this CD. The extreme diversity of these works is astonishing, considering that they all were composed between 1942 and 1952! While each work is highly individualistic, the composers have remained faithful to the oboe?s essentially lyrical character. Even the occasionally strident Zimmermann Concerto, our soloist is given ample opportunity for melodic exposition.
