This is a wonderfully unhackneyed collection from the Baroque era, mostly instrumental but with some vocal music tossed in for good measure, which contains many rarities you won't find anywhere else. The seven, well-packed CDs offer four Bach violin concerti; trumpet and orchestra works by Fantini, Alberti, Vivaldi, Scarlatti, Caldara and Torelli, Albinoni, Stradella, Corelli, Francheschini, Purcell, Monteverdi, Bononcini, Telemann, and Bendinelli; two settings of the Gloria by Vivaldi; some Handel arias; Bach's high-flying Cantata No. 51; odd, fascinating works by Predieri and von Reutter excitingly sung by soprano Helen Field; and various other concerti by Vivaldi, Marcello, and others. The richness of the Baroque era is here in all its glory. --Robert Levine

CD Reviews

Trumpet Music, Anyone?
Jeff Carsten | Charlotte, NC USA | 06/13/2001
(3 out of 5 stars)

"This is an excellent value -- 7 CD's for its price. The performances and recordings are all top quality. But pay attention: 4 of the 7 CD's are trumpet music. Many of the selections on the remaining CD's are also big and brassy. This is beautiful music, and it is from the "Masters", but you better like trumpet music, 'cause you will have 4 hours of it!"
Only the best

"What a reasonably priced set, I got mine for $25. This collection has only the best baroque music in my opinion. Like the previous reviewer said it has a lot of trumpet music but I like brass. It's just not trumpet though, it has strings and other instruments (more brass) in a lot of the same pieces. Plus, most of the pieces on here are pretty lively so this won't put you to sleep."
