Dense and Melodic

"Meghan Adkins doesn't just exorcise her demons, she exterminates them. When she cries "Wrecked, you said" in the middle of YOU CAN BE LOW's stand out track, "Kitten", you can feel the anger, see the clenched teth and experience the pain. Pretty dramatic stuff. YOU CAN BE LOW doesn't offer a variety of music: it's dense, emotive guitars, twisting progressions and soaring choruses doesn't really pave the way for a good mix. Despite this drawback, the songs are all really powerful. Take for instance, the hypnotic chanting of "3151 Loveseat", the lurching guitar of "Arnica" and the weaving cello that ties up the loose ends of "Thuja". The band knows its weaknesses, but uses them to its advantage. YOU CAN BE LOW is astonishing."

"My interest in Mavis Piggott dates back to 1996, when I first heard "You Can be Low" ... After all these years, I still have this CD in heavy rotation! A truly amazing album. From the opening growl of Meghan's Gibson SG in "T.R." to the smooth closing of "Bet," this CD is packed with great lyrics, dense and well constructed guitar arrangements (with wonderful harmonics - see "Arnica," "Bet," and the title track), excellent rhythm (check out the the drums in "3151 Loveseat") and a solid, driving bass line.

A highly recommended addition to any collection."

"I know when it's futile to try & turn someone on to some of the bands I like (Mecca Normal, anyone?), but Mavis Piggott are SO good, heavy' & smart & emotional (Fugazi, Shudder To Think, Holly and the Italians spring to mind as touchstones, but Mavis has got a dirtier, more dissonant vibe than those bands)...I can't figure out why they didn't catch on more...try to track down some music; if you're reading this, something must've made you curious about them."
