Modern mavis

"Mavis is always wonderful. This is her 2nd on Prince's Paisley Park label. It was pretty much ignored ,but I think it's great. Most Prince fans have heard Melody Cool which made me think I would not like this album, but the rest of it ,by my standards is MUCH better. The Undertaker ,the Voice ,A Man Called Jesus+You will Be Moved are outstanding tracks.I like this a little better than "Time Waits For Noone " album ,but it's good too, just a lil'mo' AM radio. This is mostly a funkier, edgier Mavis.Stil The Spirit always comes thru!"
Oh, absolutely!

"I liked "Time Waits For No One," Miss Staples' 1st Prince-produced album, but this is the one i was waiting for from them! From the bumpin' funk of the title track down to the remake of the "Lovesexy" track, "Positivity," they finally gets down to the nitty of the gritty.

Digging on the lyrical portion of this album, i sometimes wonder if Prince is psychic or been here before. The lyrics "the nightsticks are still singing 4 part harmony on brother's backs..." slightly pre-dated the Rodney King assault. Elsewhere, there is the absolute truth in the words of "U Will B Moved" (...when the whip comes down on the back of one of your own/...when you look for compassion but you find you're all alone...), with the silky background help of her dad, Pops Staples. There are definately more highlights to be heard, but i won't be greedy and take up all of your time & space. Just know that this is a beauty of an album worth purchasing (if you can find it), if you appreciate lyrics of substance."
